I just had to chime in here!
My youngest son works at a place that shares an alley with a Macy's
department store. He's gotten towels and bedding along with his
latest treasures, a queen-sized mattress/box spring set and a micro-
fiber sofa (brand spankin' new). Their store policy is to "dump"
floor model/display furniture and accessories, instead of selling
them at a discount. He asked the manager what they were doing with
them and was told their policy and that they didn't care what
happened to the stuff once they put out back.
And then there is the other side of the coin...when my oldest son was
in high school (several years ago), he worked for ACE hardware and
they routinely disposed of brand new, perfectly good items that
didn't sell, but like someone else previously posted, they destroyed
and broke the items up first. When I found out, I was appauled. He
told me they did that because they were having trouble with people
dumpster diving and then trying to return the items (as if they'd
bought them) for a cash refund. They wouldn't even let their own
employees take stuff home. Personally. I think there is something
wrong with them not letting their employees take home things that
were going to be destroyed anyway.
My roadside treasures have included a fully functioning rocker
recliner (one slight tear on the armrest and someone was getting rid
of it), a solid oak side table that needed refinished, and a slightly
rusted metal shelving unit (I sanded it, sprayed painted it black and
now it holds canned goods in my garage). Oh, and years ago, my
husband brought me home a fairly large box that was full of newspaper-
wrapped items he found when he went to the dump. Upon further
inspection it contained several collectible salt and pepper shakers,
misc. cut glass pieces, and most of a sterling tea set. I cleaned
everything up and sold most of the items to an antique dealer. How
that box ended up at the landfill sure is a mystery!
