I totaly agree!!! We had a great birthday party for my 6 year old daughter and we didn't spend hardly anything. I bought some bead sets that were on clearance and the kids had a great time making necklaces and braceletts. Then we did a Pini`ta. All the kids had a great time and they all got to take something home. Those are the kinds of things that they will remember. They won't remember and cherrish going to big expensive parties.

How about just a regular old fashioned birthday party? I don't
understand the fascination so many people have now to spend $200-300
on a birthday party for a child.
If you want to make it special, have a sleepover, and get some cheap
things at the dollar store for make-overs- body glitter, lip gloss,
fake jewelry, etc. Nothing over the top. You could do all that for
around $15-20.
Bake cup cakes ahead of time instead of a cake, then dye some white
frosting in a a few colors, and let the kids frost them and decorate
them.
Rent some girly movies that your daughter might enjoy to watch at
bed time, and have all the girls sleep out in the living room with
blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, etc.
Get out (or keep out) some white christmas lights, and string them
around the living room as a night light.
